Where Can I Recycle My Used Oil?
These options are available for your recycling of used oil and filters. Be sure to call ahead to receive updated information on collection times and storage capacity.
Curbside Pick-Up
Curbside Pick-up for used oil and used oil filters is provided by your local waste collection service provider. Curbside collection restrictions will vary by city. Contact your provider to ask about their collection program and whether they provide oil filter containers and oil filter bags for curbside collection. If available, curbside collection services will provide containers for used oil and filters and will collect them when placed next to your garbage and/or recycling toter on scheduled collection days.

Certified Collection Centers
An alternative to curbside collection is drop-off at a Certified Collection Center. When you take your used oil to a certified center for recycling, you are protecting the environment, conserving a valuable resource, and getting paid for it. California's Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) administers and provides oversight for all of California’s state-managed waste handling and recycling programs. CalRecycle encourages the recycling of used motor oil by certifying used oil recycling collection centers throughout the state. Certified Used Oil Collection Centers will take used motor oil from the public and, upon request, will pay you 40¢ a gallon. Most centers will take up to 5 gallons at a time. Some locations also accept used oil filters.

Contaminated Oil
Certified center managers will not accept used motor oil that has been contaminated with other fluids such as antifreeze, solvents, gasoline, or water. So please, don't mix your used oil with anything. Contact your city’s Household Hazardous waste facility about how to deal with your suspected contaminated oil.
Remember: If you change your own motor oil, you’re changing your oil filter at the same time.

Local household hazardous waste facilities provide residents an alternative method for used oil and filter recycling in addition to disposal options for hazardous waste. Contact the facility nearest you for drop-off hours.
